Sight Words

To support efficient reading, children need to be able to recognize some common words automatically. These words occur frequently in text.

Sight Words

Using the Dolch word list or the Fry word list, make two sets of flash cards for each word. Gradually expand the card deck as the student learns new words. Many games to practice with sight words can be played with these decks and include:

  • Play Go Fish with Sight Words
    Go Fish for Sight Words
  • Sight Word Rummy where the children make books of sight words that begin with the same letter
  • Sight Word snap. This game requires children to put down a card at the same time. If the word is the same on the cards, a player snaps his or her fingers (or says 'snap') and reads the word on the card. This becomes their match. If the words do not match, the cards get placed in a pool. Play continues and the players can match the cards that are put down or match their words to the words in the pool. The game is completed once all words are paired.
  • Sight Word Memory
  • Sight Word Bingo. There are many commercially produced Sight Word bingo games on the market.
