Classroom Management - Arousal Regulation / Attention

Unmotivated

Strategies for helping a child with the arousal regulation problem of being unmotivated include:

  • Help the student maintain a goal to work toward; this will help the student sustain engagement in the task.

Example: "When we finish our math we can go outside and play".

  • Provide consistent feedback.

  • Use acknowledgement.

Example: Say to the child, "I could tell that you understood the steps because you did all the steps to solve the problem."

Example: Put colorful sticker on the assignment page when completed, or for each step completed for complex tasks.

  • Follow demanding tasks with assignments/tasks that the student can complete successfully.

  • Use genuine praise.
