Procedures

Don’t ever assume
students know the
procedure! |

In order to successfully manage a room full of students, you must establish clearly dened procedures. As the person in charge, it is your responsibility to put procedures in place to ensure a smooth operation and a safe environment for learning. When the students enter the room on the rst day of school, assume that they know nothing—how to walk, how to talk, how to raise their hand, how to sharpen a pencil. Any activity that does not lend itself to creative expression requires procedures. When introducing a new procedure, state the expectations of your students and show them how meet the expectations, practice the procedure frequently, then reinforce it through praise. Finally, they will become routines.
