Strategies for Inattentive Students

These students have trouble focusing in class. These may often appear dazed or are busy looking out the window.

  • Break material into chunks
  • Alternate between easy and difficult tasks
  • Shorten lessons
  • Provide frequent breaks
  • Use “Give Me Five” procedure
  • Seat student close to teacher
  • Allow student to use headphones when appropriate
  • Make a study area with two file folders taped together
  • Actively involve student in lesson
  • Play non-lyrical music during seatwork
  • Use close proximity
  • Use a contract or timer for self-monitoring
