Strategies for ESL/ELL Students

You will need to assist these students because their rate of learning will be much slower while their English skills are emerging.

• Prepare visual teaching aids such as maps, charts, pictures, and flashcards
• Modify class and homework assignments
• Use actions, dramatic gestures, drawings and photographs
• Simplify your vocabulary and sentence structure
• Slow down your rate of speaking
• Avoid using pronouns for people and objects
• Ask simple yes/no questions
• Provide a picture communication wallet (Cut ESL/ELL Card Sheets* in half and attach with ring)
• Promote independent reading through decodable text
