Definition
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder
that causes motor and vocal tics, which are involuntary muscle movements
or vocal noises. These movements and sounds are often sudden, rapid,
recurrent, and confused with nervous habits or voluntary misbehavior.
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a disorder that is part of a neurobiological
tic spectrum. The following manifestations occur within this spectrum:
- Transient Tic Disorder of Childhood
A tic disorder that can be simple or complex but lasts no
more than twelve months.
- Chronic Motor Tic Disorder
Displays only motor tics for more than twelve months.
These tics may vary and can wax and wane (come and go)
and can, at times, not be displayed at all. This is true in all
other tic disorders.
- Chronic Vocal Tic Disorder
Displays only vocal tics for more than twelve months.
Involves involuntary vocalizations that may be simple or complex.
They are often confused with allergies and cold symptoms.
