Strategies for Power Seeking Students

These students want to be the boss. They want everything to be done their way. These students argue with the teacher until they've had the "last word."

  • Avoid confrontation (change the subject, agree with the student)
  • Respect the student’s personal space
  • Give redirection then walk away
  • State both viewpoints
  • Initiate a conversation on his/her interest
  • Use time out/thinking chair
  • Take a teacher time-out
  • Give choices in tasks
  • Provide leadership opportunities
  • Speak in a calm tone of voice
